It’s a real pleasure to be part of this exceptional day, I’ve been so inspired watching so many talented people do some amazing work together.

The BASE competition is a really good example of real life challenges faced by businesses and I can certainly relate to it where I work. What the competition is, is 6 months’ worth of problems condensed into 3 hours. What it will really do is help them hone those key skills they need on a day to day basis without having a massive amount of time.

Our students found the whole process incredibly valuable especially in terms of the skills they have been able to develop. They have grown in confidence and they have learnt to overcome significant hurdles to work as a strong, successful team. We are very grateful to you all for the opportunity to take part.

BASE is not like anything we study in the classroom, its real life experience which is really valuable for our future careers. It surprised me how there’s less focus on numbers whereas I thought it was all about maths and tables of statistics, now I realise there is so much problem solving and using team work to come up with solutions to business problems.

Participating in this competition has really given me an insight into chartered accountancy, and it’s definitely not boring! I’ve learnt skills that will last a lifetime.

People seem to think that you have to go to university and do accountancy to become an ICAEW Chartered Accountant; but I didn’t do that, I went to university and did languages.There are lots of schemes for school leavers, so there are so many options which I don’t think young kids know about yet.
